What to Expect When a Home Security Camera Is Installed

13 Oct 20268 min read

Booking a home security camera is the easy part. What most people want to know next is what actually happens on the day: how long we'll be there, how much drilling there is and what you need to do. This is how a typical install runs for homes and guesthouses in Gansbaai, from the first visit to the moment you check your phone.

Quick answer: When a home security camera is installed, we first walk the property and agree where each camera goes. On the day we mount the cameras, run and seal the cables, set up the recorder or app, and aim each view. We finish by testing every camera with you and showing you how to play back footage.

Before we arrive: the site visit and quote

Most jobs start with a look at the property, either in person or through photos and a short video call. We want to see the gate, doors, driveway and any blind corners. We also check where the router sits and where there's a plug point.

From that we write a quote that lists each camera, the recorder or storage, the cabling and the labour. You know the price before anyone picks up a drill. As DStv installers in Gansbaai, we've always worked that way, and camera jobs are no different.

Questions we'll ask you

  • Which spots worry you most at night?
  • Do you want to watch live on your phone, or only check footage after something happens?
  • Is the house lived in, a guesthouse, or empty for months at a time?

How to get your home ready for a home security camera install

A little prep saves time on the day.

  • Move cars out of the driveway so we can reach the eaves and the garage wall.
  • Clear a path to the roof space hatch if cables will run through the ceiling.
  • Have your WiFi name and password ready.
  • Download the camera app if you already know which brand you're getting.
  • Put dogs in a room away from the work, because ladders and excited pets don't mix.

Installation day, step by step

  1. Final walk-around. We confirm each camera position with you, as plans sometimes change once you stand at the spot.
  2. Mounting. Brackets go up on solid walls or fascia boards, with rust-resistant fixings.
  3. Cabling. Cables run through the ceiling or along neat trunking to the recorder, or to a nearby plug point for WiFi models.
  4. Sealing. Every joint and wall entry gets weatherproofed so rain and salt can't creep in. We learnt that lesson on dishes, and our note on salt air damage outdoors shows why.
  5. Setup. We connect the recorder, set the date and time, and link the system to your phone.
  6. Aiming. Each view is adjusted on screen until faces and number plates are clear where it counts.

Expect some drilling noise and a little dust. We clean up as we go.

How long a home security camera installation takes

Time on site depends on the number of cameras and how easy the cable runs are. A small WiFi setup is very different from a wired system with a recorder.

Type of jobWhat we doUsual time on site
One or two WiFi camerasMount, power, connect to the appOften a couple of hours
Four wired cameras and a recorderCeiling cable runs, recorder setup, phone linkUsually most of a day
Guesthouse or large plotLong runs, outbuildings, more camerasCan need a second visit

If a job grows on the day, we tell you before doing extra work. You won't get a surprise on the invoice.

What's different about installs on the Gansbaai coast

Out here the weather does most of the damage. Salt spray off the bay eats cheap screws and dulls camera lenses, and the wind tests every bracket. We use stainless fixings, mount cameras under eaves where we can, and seal cable entries properly.

Holiday homes that stand empty

Many houses in De Kelders, Franskraal and Pearly Beach sit empty for months. For those we plan around remote checking: phone alerts, backup power for the router and a recorder hidden away from the front door. Our post on CCTV for empty holiday homes goes deeper into that set-up.

Guesthouses and small businesses

Guesthouses and tourism businesses in Kleinbaai often want cameras on parking and entrances, with guest rooms kept private. More cameras usually means a bigger recorder. Our guide to 16 channel DVR systems explains how far one box can stretch.

Distance between villages

We cover the whole stretch from Stanford down to Pearly Beach, so we book jobs in the same area on the same day where we can. Tell us early if you need a specific date. It's often the same or next day, depending on the schedule.

The handover: learning your home security camera app

Before we leave, we sit with you and go through the app on your own phone. You'll watch each camera live, play back a clip, and save a short video to your phone. We also set motion alerts so they warn you about people at the gate, not every gull that lands on the wall.

If someone else in the family needs access, we add them too. For holiday homes, that might be a neighbour or a caretaker who can check in when you can't.

Technician tip: Ask us to show you how to download footage, not just watch it. If something does happen, the police or your insurer will want the clip as a file, and that's not the moment to learn the menus.

After the install: looking after your CCTV cameras

Cameras need very little care, but the coast still asks for some. Wipe salt film off the lenses every few weeks with a soft damp cloth, from the ground if you can reach. Check the app now and then to make sure each camera is still recording.

Weak WiFi is the most common reason a wireless security camera drops off the app. If a camera at the far end of the property keeps going offline, our WiFi and network installation work can carry a stronger signal out to it.

Safety first: Don't climb a ladder in the wind to clean or move a camera under a high eave, and don't touch the wiring or power supply. Call us instead. A fall off a ladder is far more costly than a short call-out.

Home security camera: FAQs

How long does it take to install a home security camera system?

A couple of WiFi cameras can be done in a few hours. A wired system with four cameras and a recorder usually takes most of a day, because the cables have to be run through the ceiling and sealed outside. Bigger properties with outbuildings may need a second visit.

Can I install home security cameras myself?

Simple plug-in WiFi cameras can be set up by most people, as long as the camera is within easy reach and close to a plug. Wired systems, high eaves and anything near mains power are better left to an installer. Poor sealing on the coast also leads to faults within a few months.

Do I need to be home when security cameras are installed?

It helps to be there at the start and at the end. At the start you confirm where each camera goes, and at the end we show you the app on your phone. For holiday homes, a caretaker or neighbour can let us in and we can do the app handover over a call.

Do wireless security cameras need WiFi?

Most do if you want live viewing and phone alerts. Many will still record to an SD card without WiFi, but you only see the footage once you're back in range. A strong signal at each camera spot matters more than the speed of the line.

Do you install CCTV cameras in Gansbaai holiday homes?

Yes, a lot of our camera work is on holiday homes that stand empty for months. We plan for remote checking with phone alerts, backup power for the router and a recorder hidden indoors. We also use coastal-grade fixings so the system copes with salt and wind.
