Best WiFi Router Features for Streaming DStv and Netflix

11 Oct 20269 min read

The best WiFi router for streaming DStv and Netflix isn't the one with the most antennas or the flashiest box. It's the one with two WiFi bands, a few wired ports, decent range and simple controls that put your TV first. In Gansbaai, where many homes have thick walls, long passages and a sea view that comes with wind and salt, those features matter more than the brand name.

Quick answer: For smooth streaming, pick a dual-band WiFi router that supports WiFi 6, has at least two gigabit network ports, offers device priority (often called QoS) and comes with a phone app for updates. If your home is long or double-storey, choose one that can grow into a mesh system. Then cable the TV or decoder wherever you can.

Why streaming asks more of your WiFi router

Browsing and WhatsApp send small bursts of data. A Netflix series or a live match on DStv Stream pulls a steady flow for hours, and the picture drops in quality or buffers the moment that flow stutters.

The trouble starts when two TVs stream while someone in the next room is on a video call. A basic router copes with one job well. Give it four jobs at once and it falls behind, and everyone notices.

Your decoder may lean on the internet too. The Explora Ultra has built-in WiFi and streaming apps, and Catch Up on an Explora needs a connection. Our notes on connecting an Explora to WiFi cover the hookup itself, so here we'll focus on the router behind it.

Six features that stop buffering

These are the features we check first when someone asks us what to buy. You don't need all of them on day one, but the first three make the biggest difference to a streaming home.

Dual-band WiFi

A dual-band router sends out two signals. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further and goes through walls better, while the 5 GHz band is much faster over shorter distances.

A TV in the same room as the router, or one wall away, should sit on 5 GHz. Phones in the garden or the far bedroom can use 2.4 GHz. Good routers move devices between the bands for you.

WiFi 6 support

WiFi 6 is the version most new phones, laptops and smart TVs now use. Its big advantage isn't raw speed. It's handling lots of devices at the same time without slowing each one down.

WiFi 7 routers are on the shelves too, but they cost more and most TVs can't use the extra yet. For a normal streaming household, WiFi 6 is the sweet spot.

Gigabit network ports

A cable beats WiFi every time for a TV that never moves. Look for at least two gigabit LAN ports on the back, so the smart TV, Streama or decoder can plug straight in.

Still choosing a decoder? Our Explora Ultra installation visits include joining the box to your home network, so it's ready for apps on day one.

Device priority (QoS)

Quality of service, or QoS, lets you tell the router which devices matter most. Put the lounge TV at the top and a big phone backup won't wreck the second half of the rugby.

A phone app and automatic updates

Modern routers come with an app that shows what's connected, runs a speed test and installs updates on its own. Updates fix bugs and security holes, and a router that never gets them slowly falls behind.

Room to add mesh

A mesh router system uses two or three matching units that work as one network. If the router you buy can add mesh units later, you can start with one and grow when a far room needs it.

Features you can happily skip

Router boxes are covered in big claims. Plenty of them won't make Netflix or DStv look any better on your TV.

  • Gaming modes and flashing lights. They're aimed at online gamers, not at a family watching series.
  • Eight or more antennas. Antenna count says little about real range in a home with thick walls.
  • Headline speeds on the box. Those figures add the bands together under lab conditions, and you'll never see them on one TV.
  • USB media sharing. Most people stream from apps now, not from a hard drive plugged into the router.

Picking a WiFi router for Gansbaai homes and holiday lets

Many houses in Gansbaai, De Kelders and Kleinbaai were built for the weather, with solid walls and small windows on the windward side. That's great in a winter storm, but it's hard on WiFi. Range and mesh support matter more here than in a small flat.

Holiday homes that stand empty for months need a router you can check from far away. With a good app you can see if it's online, restart it and install updates before you arrive. It also keeps CCTV on an empty holiday home online while you're away.

Guesthouses that host shark-diving visitors need a guest network. It keeps visitors' phones off your own devices, and our guide to WiFi for a guesthouse explains how we split the two.

Out at Pearly Beach, Franskraal and towards Stanford, distances are long and some homes rely on LTE rather than fibre. A fibre router needs a WAN port for the fibre box, and an LTE router needs a SIM slot. As DStv installers in Gansbaai, we check this before we recommend anything.

Technician tip: Keep the router indoors and away from a window that faces the sea. Salt air and damp creep in around old frames, and corroded plugs and ports on windowsill routers are a common sight on the coast. A shelf in a central room is better for both range and lifespan.

Router prices and what you're paying for

Router prices in South Africa range from basic models supplied free with an internet deal to mesh kits that cost several times more. Shops run specials every week, so we don't quote a store price here. Compare on the day and check what's in the box.

The free router from your provider is usually fine for a small home with one TV. It often lacks QoS and mesh support, and it may be a few years behind. A mid-range dual-band WiFi 6 model is where most streaming homes land.

When you look at wifi router prices, remember the router is only part of the cost. Network cable to the TV, a mesh unit for the far bedroom and setup time all add up. Ask our team for a current quote that covers the whole job.

Setting up your WiFi router for streaming

  1. Put the router in a central spot, about chest height, not in a TV cabinet or on the floor behind the couch.
  2. Run a network cable to the main TV or decoder if you can. Our TV wall mounting work can hide that cable in the wall at the same time.
  3. Give the 5 GHz network a clear name so you know which one the TV is on.
  4. Turn on QoS or device priority and move the lounge TV to the top.
  5. Switch on automatic updates in the app.
  6. Run a speed test next to the router, then at the TV, and compare the two.

If the TV gets far less than the spot next to the router, you have a coverage problem, not an internet one. Our tips on beating WiFi dead spots deal with exactly that.

Get the right WiFi router fitted properly

Buying a good router is half the job. Placing it well, cabling the TV and setting priorities is the other half, and that's where our WiFi and network installation service comes in.

WiFi router: FAQs

What is the best WiFi router for streaming on multiple devices?

Choose a dual-band WiFi 6 router with QoS so you can rank devices, and plug the main TV in by cable. That frees the wireless side for phones and tablets. If the house is big, add mesh units rather than buying one giant router.

Does the DStv Explora Ultra have WiFi?

Yes. The Explora Ultra has built-in WiFi and streaming apps, so it can join your home network without an extra connector. Satellite channels still come in through the dish, but the apps and online features need a steady internet connection.

How much is a WiFi router in South Africa?

It varies a lot. Some providers include a basic router with a fibre or LTE deal, while dual-band WiFi 6 models and mesh kits cost more and change price with every special. Compare a few shops on the day, and ask our team for a current quote if you'd like it installed.

Is a mesh router worth it for a Gansbaai holiday home?

It is if the house is long, double-storey or has thick walls between the lounge and the bedrooms. A mesh system covers the whole home with one network name, so guests don't have to switch. For a small cottage, one good router in the middle is usually enough.

Can I put my WiFi router in a TV cabinet?

You can, but you'll lose range. Wood, glass doors and the metal back of a TV all soak up signal, and the router runs hotter in a closed space. A nearby open shelf works better, with a short cable to the TV if it sits close by.
